Optimizing Signal Strength & Understanding RSSI
Summary: RFX uses Sub-GHz radio to communicate, which is incredibly strong, but walls and interference can still degrade performance. You can optimize your connection by running the Gateway on battery power and understanding your signal strength (RSSI) numbers.
Tip 1: Unplug for Maximum Range
One of the best ways to boost your signal range is simple: Unplug the USB power.
- Why? AC power adapters and battery banks generate a small amount of "electrical noise" that can interfere with the radio antenna.
- Recommendation: When you need maximum range (e.g., the Gateway is far inside the house), run the RFX GATEWAY on its internal battery.
- Exception: If you are using Billows®, you must plug in power. However, since the Gateway is usually sitting right next to the smoker in this scenario, the slight signal loss rarely matters.
How to Improve Weak Signals
If your RSSI is -95dBm or lower, try these adjustments:
1. Antenna Orientation
Radio waves travel best when antennas are parallel.
- Ensure that both the Gateway Antenna and RFX MEAT Probe are pointing straight UP (vertical).
2. Reduce Interference
Physical obstacles block radio waves.
- Aluminum Foil: Wrapping the meat (and the probe handle) in foil is like putting the probe in a metal cage. It will severely block the signal.
- Walls & Windows: Metal siding, brick walls, and glass windows are major signal blockers. Try moving the Gateway to a different location.
3. The "Wait and See" Method
After moving the Gateway, be patient.
- It takes about 1 minute for the RSSI value in the App to update.
- Move the device, wait for the timestamp to refresh, and then check the new RSSI number to see if you improved the signal.
