Summary: There are steps to fix an inactive reading on RFX MEAT. An "INACTIVE" status means the cloud has stopped receiving data from your probe. This is usually caused by a dead battery (dirty contacts preventing charge) or a disconnected Gateway.
Verify Probe Power (The "Heartbeat" Check)
First, ensure the probe actually has power. A dead probe cannot talk.
- Clean the Probe: Scrub the metal shaft until shiny. Smoke residue prevents charging.
- Check the LED: Insert the probe into the charging block.
- Heartbeat (2 Flashes, Pause): Healthy. Let it charge for 20 minutes.
- 10 Blinks / Rapid Blinking: Connection error or low AAA battery. Clean contacts again or replace the AAA battery.
Verify RFX GATEWAY Connection
The probe relies on the Gateway to speak to the app. Check the LED.
- Green: The RFX GATEWAY is connected to Wi-Fi.
- Red: The Gateway has lost Wi-Fi. Troubleshoot the Gateway connection first.
Transmission Interval
If the probe is charged and the Gateway is green, the probe might just be waiting for the temperature to change enough due to the temperature-based transmission interval.
- How it Works: If your Interval is set to 3°, the probe only sends data when the temperature changes that many degrees in one sensor. If the probe is sitting on the counter (stable temp), it may not update for a long time.
Optimize Signal Strength
If it still shows inactive, try these physical adjustments to boost the radio link:
- Orientation: Point both the Gateway antenna and the Probe handle Vertical (towards the sky).
- Distance: Move the Gateway closer to the smoker.
- Unplug the Gateway: Surprisingly, the RFX GATEWAY radio is optimized to run on its internal battery. Unplugging the USB power cable can sometimes reduce electrical noise and improve range.
