Summary: If your RFX MEAT probe fails to pair, it is usually because the probe is already registered to another account, the probe was not held close enough to the antenna during setup, or the Account Limit (10 devices) has been reached,
Step 1: Is it on Another Account?
For security reasons, an RFX MEAT probe can only be registered to one email address/ThermoWorks account at a time.
- The Issue: If this probe was previously added to an anonymous account, used by a friend, a family member, or on a secondary email address of yours, it is still "locked" to that account.
- The Fix: The original account owner must log in to their App, go to Device Settings, and select "Remove Device". Once released, it can be added to your account immediately.
- If it was added to another account (anonymous or otherwise) and you don't have access to it anymore, a ThermoWorker can remove the device for you. Please let us know if this is the case and we'll make sure you're taken care of.
Step 2: The "Antenna Touch" Rule
If the account is clear, the issue is likely physical signal strength during the security handshake.
- Requirement: The probe must be within a few inches of the RFX GATEWAY antenna during the pairing process.
- Action: Remove the probe from the charger and hold it against the Gateway antenna for up to 2 minutes while the App searches. If you are even a few feet away, the secure pairing mode may reject the connection.
Step 3: Check Your Device Limit
The free tier of ThermoWorks Cloud allows a maximum of 10 Devices.
- The Math: The RFX GATEWAY counts as 1 device. Each RFX MEAT probe counts as 1 device.
- The Fix: If you have 10 devices, you must remove an old device or upgrade your plan before adding a new one.
Step 4: Verify Gateway Connection
The probe cannot talk to the Cloud if the Gateway isn't online.
- Check the LED on your RFX GATEWAY. It must be Solid Green (Connected).
- If the Gateway LED is red or blue, troubleshoot the RFX GATEWAY's Wi-Fi connection first.
