Summary: Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) measures the quality of the connection between your RFX MEAT probe and the RFX GATEWAY. Maintaining a strong signal is critical not only for data consistency but also for preserving battery life. The closer to 0 you are, the stronger the signal you have.

What is a "Good" Signal?
In most cooking environments, your goal signal strength should be between -70 and -90 dBm.
IMPORTANT: dBm is a negative scale. Closer to zero = stronger. -30 dBm is stronger than -50 dBm, and -50 is stronger than -70.
Signal Strength Reference Scale
Check the dBm value in your ThermoWorks App settings to see how your current connection is performing:

How Signal Affects Battery Life
⚠️ Weak Signal = Rapid Battery Drain
When the signal drops to -95 dBm or worse, the probe has to "shout" (increase its power output and re-transmit data multiple times) to get a single reading to the Gateway. This drastically increases power consumption and can drain a battery that would otherwise last for many more cooks.
Tips for Improving Signal
- Line of Sight: Position the RFX GATEWAY so it has the clearest possible "view" of your cooker.
- Minimize Obstacles: Thick brick walls, metal siding, and heavy smoker lids can significantly degrade dBm.
- Proximity: If you are consistently seeing -100 dBm or worse (e.g., -110, -120), move the RFX GATEWAY closer to the cooking area.
