Summary: If your RFX MEAT is not connecting or frequently drops signal, the cause is usually one of three things: 1) Dead battery (due to dirty charging contacts), 2) Physical interference (range/walls), or 3) A hardware issue with the Gateway antenna.
Step 1: Verify Power (The "Heartbeat" Check)
A probe with a dead battery looks exactly like a broken radio. You must rule out power first.
- Clean the Probe: Scrub the metal shaft until shiny to remove any insulating smoke residue.
- Check the LED: Place the probe in the charging block.
- Heartbeat (2 Flashes, Pause): Healthy. Allow it to charge for 20 minutes.
- 10 Blinks / Rapid Blinking: Bad connection. Clean again or replace the AAA battery.
Step 2: The Signal Strength "Bench Test"
If the probe is charged but still won't connect (or drops out), perform this specific test to check the Gateway's radio health.
- Placement: Lay the connected RFX MEAT probe directly ON TOP of the RFX GATEWAY.
- Wait: Allow a moment for the probe to transmit.
- Check App: Look at the Signal Strength (RSSI) in the App settings.
- Healthy Range: Between –21 dBm and –30 dBm.
- Underperforming: If the signal is significantly weaker (e.g., -50 or -80 dBm) while sitting on the device, the Gateway hardware may be failing.
Step 3: Interference & Obstacles
Radio signals struggle to penetrate dense materials.
- Obstacles: Thick brick walls, metal siding, or multiple interior walls will block the signal.
- Solution: Move the RFX GATEWAY closer to the smoker (e.g., place it near a window close to the cooking area) to establish a better line-of-sight.
Step 4: Heat Damage History
Extreme heat damages radio components.
- If the probe was ever used without being inserted up to the immersion line, the internal components may have been compromised. This often manifests as "weak signal" or frequent disconnections even at close range.
