Getting Started with RFX Wireless (Gateway & Meat)
Summary: The RFX system requires a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network and the ThermoWorks App to function. Because the hardware has no physical speaker, you must enable App notifications to receive alarms. Critical: The RFX MEAT probe must always be inserted up to the immersion line to prevent irreversible heat damage.
Step 1: Connection Setup
- Wi-Fi Network: You must use a 2.4GHz network. This lower frequency provides the wall penetration and range required for reliable outdoor cooking. (5GHz networks are not supported).
- The App: Download the ThermoWorks App (iOS or Android).
- Account Limits: A free basic account supports up to 10 cloud-connected devices. (Note: The Gateway counts as one device, and each Probe counts as one device).
Step 2: Protecting Your Probe (The Immersion Line)
⚠️ CRITICAL WARNING: Irreversible Damage
The internal electronics of the RFX MEAT are located inside the metal shaft. You MUST insert the probe into the meat up to the marked Immersion Line.
- Above immersion line: Safe up to 1,000°F (538°C).
- Below immersion line: The insertion end cannot exceed 212°F (100°C). If you leave the shaft exposed to hot air, the battery and sensors will die. This is not covered by warranty.
Step 3: Using Billows? Check Your Power.
If you are connecting a Billows BBQ Fan to your RFX Gateway:
- Do NOT use the standard USB plug: The 5-volt adapter included with the RFX Gateway is not strong enough.
- Use the Billows Adapter: You must use the 12-volt power adapter that came with your Billows fan to run the system.
Step 4: Cooking with RFX
Probe Placement (4-Sensor Technology)
RFX MEAT contains four sensors near the tip. It automatically finds and displays the lowest temperature reading.
- Visualize: Hold the probe against the outside of the meat to see where the tip will land.
- Insert: Push the probe in from an angle that hits the thermal center (thickest part) while ensuring you reach the safety immersion line.
Enable Notifications (No Physical Alarm)
The RFX Gateway and Probe do not beep. They rely entirely on your phone to alert you.
- Action: Open the App Menu (Hamburger Icon) User Notifications.
- Ensure all permissions are enabled so you don't miss a high-temp alarm.
