Summary: This guide covers connection issues for all devices supported by the ThermoWorks App (Signals, RFX, NODE, etc.). Most connection failures are caused by 2.4GHz network mismatches, incorrect permissions, or password character limits on specific devices.
Supported Devices
The ThermoWorks App supports the following:
- Wi-Fi & Bluetooth: RFX GATEWAY, Signals, NODE, Smoke Gateway, ThermaData WiFi, ThermaQ WiFi.
- Bluetooth Only: BlueDOT, ThermaQ Blue. (These devices do not use Wi-Fi).
Step 1: The "Quick Check" List
Before deep diving into router settings, ensure these basics are met:
- Power: Is the device charged and turned on?
- App Version: Is your ThermoWorks App updated to the latest version in the App Store/Play Store?
- Bluetooth: Is Bluetooth enabled on your phone? (Required for the initial handshake).
- Account Status: Is the device already added to a different user's account? (A device can only belong to one cloud account at a time).
Step 2: Wi-Fi Network & Credentials
1. The 2.4GHz Rule
⚠️ 2.4GHz Networks ONLY
All ThermoWorks Wi-Fi devices connect exclusively to 2.4GHz networks. They cannot see or connect to 5GHz networks.
Troubleshooting "Band Steering": Many modern routers combine 2.4GHz and 5GHz into one name. If the router tries to "steer" the device to 5GHz, the connection will fail.
Tip: Try connecting to a Guest Network, which is often 2.4GHz only.
2. Password Precision
- Case Sensitive: "MyPassword" is different from "mypassword".
- No Spaces: Avoid using "Auto-Fill" or "Copy/Paste" to enter your password. These methods often add a hidden space at the end of the text, causing the password to be rejected. Type it manually.
Step 3: Device-Specific Password Limits
Some older devices have strict rules for Wi-Fi passwords. If your password violates these rules, the device will refuse to connect.
| Device | Password Restrictions |
|---|---|
| Signals™ |
|
| Smoke Gateway |

Step 4: Location Permissions
The App requires Location Services to scan for Bluetooth devices (this is a requirement of the iOS/Android operating systems, not ThermoWorks).
- The Rule: Permission must be set to "While Using the App" (or "Always").
- How to Check:
- iOS (Apple): Settings ThermoWorks Location Select "While Using".
- Android: Settings Apps ThermoWorks Permissions Location Select "Allow only while using the app".
Step 5: Bluetooth Connection Tips
If you are using a Bluetooth-only device (BlueDOT, ThermaQ Blue) or re-connecting a device:
- Do Not Use Phone Settings: Never try to pair the device in your phone's main Bluetooth menu. It must be done inside the ThermoWorks App.
- Re-Connecting: If a device was previously added but isn't connecting, tap the device in the App, go to Settings (Gear Icon), and tap the yellow "Connect" button.
