ThermaData WiFi: Functionality, Sampling Logic & Best Practices
Summary: The ThermaData WiFi is an automated data logger that records temperature (and humidity) to internal memory and transmits it to the ThermoWorks Cloud. It eliminates manual logbooks, provides remote access to data, and sends instant alerts if critical limits are breached.
How It Works: Sampling vs. Transmission
To get the most out of your logger, you must understand the two distinct "intervals" of the device.
1. The Sample Rate (The "Recording" interval)
This is how often the device wakes up to take a measurement, update the LCD screen, and check for alarms.
- Display Updates: The screen only updates when a sample is taken. It does not show real-time changes between samples.
- The "Blind Spot" Risk: If your sample rate is too slow (e.g., once per hour), a temperature spike could occur and resolve itself completely between samples, and the logger would never know.
2. The Transmission Rate (The "Upload" interval)
This is how often the device turns on its Wi-Fi radio to upload the stored data to the Cloud.
- Battery Life: Wi-Fi is power-hungry. Setting a transmission rate of "Every 5 Minutes" will drain batteries quickly. A rate of "Every 4 Hours" is much more efficient.
The "Instant Alert" Override
You might worry: "If I only transmit data every 4 hours, will I wait 4 hours to know my fridge is broken?"
No. The ThermaData WiFi has a smart override feature.
Instant Alarm Transmission
If the logger detects an alarm condition during a Sample, it wakes up the Wi-Fi radio immediately and sends an alert to your phone. It does not wait for the next scheduled transmission interval.
Best Practices for Walk-Ins & Coolers
Balancing battery life with data density is key. Here is a typical setup for a commercial cooler:
| Setting | Recommended Value | Why? |
|---|---|---|
| Sample Rate | 15 to 30 Minutes | Fast enough to catch issues, slow enough to save memory. |
| Transmission Rate | 4 to 6 Hours | Saves battery. You don't need to stare at the graph all day. |
Software Compatibility
- Primary Tool: ThermoWorks Cloud & App. This is the intended platform for full functionality, archiving, and alerts.
