Summary: Connection issues usually stem from three areas: Bluetooth interference during the initial pairing, Wi-Fi band mismatches (using 5GHz instead of 2.4GHz), or network security settings (firewalls/VPNs).
Phase 1: "I Can't Find/Pair the Device"
Signals uses Bluetooth to "handshake" with your phone before connecting to Wi-Fi. If the App cannot find the device:
- Toggle Bluetooth: Turn your phone's Bluetooth OFF, wait 10 seconds, and turn it back ON.
- Check Permissions: Ensure Location Services are enabled for the ThermoWorks App. (Android and iOS require this to scan for Bluetooth devices).
- Physical Range: Ensure the phone is within 15 feet of the device during setup.
- Reduce Interference:
- Other Bluetooth devices (speakers, watches) can crowd the signal.
- Physical barriers like metal tables or masonry walls block Bluetooth almost completely.
Phase 2: "I Can't Connect to Wi-Fi"
If Bluetooth connects but fails during the Wi-Fi step:
1. The 2.4GHz Rule
Signals only connects to 2.4GHz networks. It cannot see or connect to 5GHz networks.
- Combined Networks: If your router combines 2.4 and 5GHz into one name, try moving the device to the edge of your Wi-Fi range (where 5GHz drops off) to force a 2.4GHz connection.
2. Password & Security Specifics
Even if the password is correct, the format might be the issue.
- Character Limit: The Wi-Fi password must be 39 characters or less.
- Security Type: Must be WPA/WPA2 or Open. (WEP and WPA3-Enterprise are incompatible).
- Case Sensitivity: Network Names (SSID) and Passwords are Case Sensitive. (e.g., "MyNetwork" is different from "mynetwork").
- Spaces: Do not copy/paste your password. This often adds a hidden "space" at the end which causes failure. Type it manually.
Phase 3: Advanced Network Fixes
If basic steps fail, your network environment might be blocking the device.
- Mesh Networks (Eero, Orbi, Nest): Temporarily unplug all satellite nodes, leaving only the main router. Connect Signals, then plug the satellites back in.
- Software Conflicts: Turn off VPNs and Ad Blockers on your phone during setup.
- The "Hardware Test": Try connecting Signals to a different network (like a phone hotspot). If it connects there instantly, the issue is your home router's firewall, not the device.
