Ice Bath Test: Steps for Dealing with Inaccurate Readings

Step 1: Identifying the Problem

Before performing an accuracy test, ensure the following basic conditions are met:

• Power: Confirm the battery is seated correctly within the battery compartment.
• Cleanliness: Thoroughly clean the probe tip to remove any buildup or grease.

Step 2: The Accurate Ice Bath Test

An ice bath is the only reliable way to test calibration at home, but it must be prepared correctly. A simple glass of ice water is not an ice bath.

1. Fill with Ice: Fill a tall glass to the very rim with ice (crushed is preferred but not required) [00:00:51].
2. Add Water: Add just enough cold water to fill the gaps between the ice. The water level should be about 1/2 inch below the top of the ice [00:00:54]. If the ice floats off the bottom, the test will be inaccurate.
3. Stir and Wait: Stir the mixture and let it sit for 1–2 minutes to allow the temperature to stabilize [00:01:16].
4. Test the Probe: Insert your probe about 2 inches into the mixture. Gently stir the probe while observing the display [00:01:21]. It should read 32°F (0°C) within your device's accuracy specification.

Step 3: If Your Probe Fails the Test

• Hand Wash Only: Never submerge the probe transition (where the wire meets the metal) or put probes in the dishwasher. Wipe with a damp cloth and sanitizer.
• Cable Management: Do not wrap cables tightly around the instrument. Use silicone probe spools to prevent internal wire breakage.
